How Intents Work, Behind the Magic

Let’s break it down into a straightforward workflow using iLayer.

You tell iLayer (or one of our integrated partners) what you want:

Then we handle that, safely, automatically, and crosschain.

1. Escrow Setup: Funds Locked, You Stay in Control

Once you approve the intent, your tokens are locked into a smart contract, not as a payment, but as a secured deposit. Think of it like an escrow:

  • Your funds are held safely by iLayer’s OrderHub.
  • You can cancel and unlock them at any time until the job is done.
  • No one can touch them unless your intent is fulfilled exactly as requested.

2. Intent Registration Across Chains

Behind the scenes, iLayer sends your request to the destination chain using secure crosschain messaging, currently via @LayerZero_Core or @axelar.

  • The receiving contract (called the OrderSpoke) logs your order and prepares for execution.

3. Execution: Solvers Make It Happen

Once your intent is live, iLayer’s network of solvers (our DeFi wizards) picks it up. They handle everything:

  • Providing quotes
  • Executing swaps, deposits, stakes, or any custom action
  • Optimizing for cost, latency, and slippage

If your intent includes an extra action (like depositing into a specific protocol), that gets executed too, securely and in isolation to avoid any bad behavior.

4. Verification & Settlement

After the intent is fulfilled, the solver submits proof, confirming that everything happened as promised.

Then:

  • You receive the outcome (your tokens, yield, position, etc.) on the destination chain.
  • iLayer releases your tokens from escrow.
  • The solver gets paid.
